Description
The founder of Warm the Line, Katherine Mullins, spearheaded this initiative as a means for keeping people warm while they waited on long lines to vote in swing states during the 2020 election. She felt angered by the voter suppression tactics taking place around the country. She thought – what could be more unifying than a hand made comfort item from complete strangers given to express our gratitude for their tenacity? She reached into the craft community and quickly found more than a dozen talented, engaged and caring volunteers who signed on to partner with her to create warm accessories, distribute these items to people, and engage and inform on Instagram. Currently 4 of them have continued with the project: Lisa Chamoff, Erica Owens, and Judy Del Signore. This initiative expanded throughout the creative community nationwide and within a few months, over 3,000 items were created and distributed to people in several states in November 2020.
I have decided during this 2024 election period to support this worthy cause. Being born in Michigan and living in Texas, I know what standing in long, cold lines feels like and I also know what voter suppression looks like. So I am asking you to help me help out. Please consider knitting or crocheting a hat, scarf, mittens or even a blanket and donate it to Warm the Line. I am a drop off point and can forward items to Katherine. Additionally, if you need yarn to make one of these items, I will be selling chunky, bulky, aran and worsted yarn, 100% merino, mostly single ply at a drastically reduced prices.
